Lady Elliot Island
WHERE THE REEF BEGINS!TM
Lady Elliot, the first coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef, is one of only 3 coral cay resorts along the reef's entire 2000 km length. Accessible by conventional aircraft from the mainland, the 25 minute flight from Bundaberg offers the fastest transfer to the reef.
Snorkel or take a glass bottom boat ride right off the white coral-sand beach and let the breathtaking coral landscapes and creatures work their magic on you. Lady Elliot offers world-class scuba diving and is home to the Australian Geographic Manta Ray project. Visitors can explore this rich marine eco-system and observe the many forms of wildlife that make Lady Elliott their home, including the 50,000 sea birds that raise their young on the Island and the loggerhead and green turtles which come to lay their eggs. Regular guided tours offer visitors the opportunity to get up-close and personal with these unique creatures, learn their migration patterns and the unique characteristics of each species. From late June to October, it's also not uncommon to witness the graceful Humpback Whales migrating in close proximity to the island. Scuba divers may come face to face with a manta ray or moray eel and snorkellers can see the giant rainbow-coloured parrot fish or the beautiful coral trout.
For those wanting to educate themselves a little more, guests can also take advantage of the Island Discovery and History walk, which highlights the natural wonders of the beach and lagoon, the bird rookery, the lighthouse and the historical artifacts left behind by the guano miners.
